Abstract

Background. The study of mythopoetics still remains one of the important directions of literary criticism of the XXI century with a new view of the myth, formed in the science and art of the XX century. The purpose of the study is to consider the semantics of the classical myth of Orpheus and Eurydice in works by O. Mandelstam, as well as to define the artistic function of those deviations from the canonical story, which Mandelstam introduced in the structure of the texts.
Materials and methods. Through the prism of the myth about Orpheus and Eurydice one may read not only poems that contain the name of the ancient hero, but the works of “the Gluck’s cycle” associated with the production of the Gluck’s opera “Orpheus and Eurydice” by Meyerhold, as well as such texts as “Swallow”, “I’m in the dance of shadows that trampled the tender meadow...”. The analysis was conducted using comparative historical and formal methods.
Results. The researcher analyzed subjects, figurative, rhythmical-intonational, lexical-semantic systems of the designated works. The article emphasizes the importance of the figure of Orpheus in the work of Mandelstam, as well as various models of reception of antiquity realized in the considered texts. An analysis was carried out in term of the mythopoetic optics of the poems, allowing us to reinterpret some aspects of the creative heritage of the poet.
Conclusions. The researcher concludes the eclectic and multifaceted reception of antiquity being characteristic of Mandelstam’s poetics, in which the poet refuses to literally reproduce the anthological heritage.
